Scientific teams from Kuban State University took part in a competition of innovative developments and projects as part of the RosBiotech-Med International Business Conference held in Moscow under the auspices of the RosBioTech International Biotechnology Forum. This year’s theme is «International scientific, technical and industrial cooperation in pharmacology, medicine and healthcare».
The conference showcased innovative developments and products for biomedicine and the pharmaceutical industry. Developments of five research teams from Kuban State University took part in the competition programme and all of them were awarded medals and prizes.
Teams from the Faculty of Chemistry and High Technology and the Faculty of Biology received the highest awards.
One of them is the development «Software for prognosis of lung cancer by exhaled air using neural networks», authors: Gashimova E.M., Temerdashev A.Z., Perunov D.V., Polyakov I.S., Porkhanov V.A.
— During the work on our joint project with the Clinical Hospital No. 1 on lung cancer prognosis, a whole complex of studies was carried out on the possibilities and limitations of exhaled air as an object for lung cancer diagnosis,» said Azamat Temerdashev, Professor of the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Doctor of Chemical Sciences. — Exhaled air is a convenient research object that does not cause stress or pain to the patient. Previously, our team worked together to collect a fairly large sample of volunteers, both healthy and with confirmed lung cancer, which allowed us to analyse hundreds of samples and build a model based on a neural network that allowed us to achieve fairly high selectivity and specificity.
Another «golden» project is «Medium for prolonged disinfection of premises» by Khudokormov A.A., Samkov A.A. and Volchenko N.N.
— Microscopic fungi can quickly adapt to disinfectants, thus reducing their effectiveness,» said Alexander Khudokormov, Head of the Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Candidate of Biological Sciences. — We have proposed a variant of the disinfectant composition with additional components that increase the time of adaptation of the micromycetes to the fungicide. This prolongs the fungicidal effect by 45%, which reduces the number of treatments and increases the economic effect of the product. The water-based product is well absorbed and does not alter the treated surfaces, allowing it to be used on painted, plastered and wooden surfaces.
The Gold Medal was also awarded to the development of «Method of increasing the number and antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles on silk suture material» by S.S. Dzhimak, A.A. Basov, V.V. Malyshko, D.I. Shashkov, I.S. Petriev, A.A. Dorokhova.
Silver medals were awarded to V.A. Akinshina, R.A. Agoyan, M.D. Andreeva, L.Yu. Karakhalis, N.V. Lee, A.A. Khalafyan for the project «Application of Artificial Intelligence Methods to the Development of Medical Decision Support Systems in Reproduction and Demography».
— Despite medical advances and understanding of the mechanisms of preterm birth, about 15 million babies are born prematurely and the incidence of preterm birth is increasing in most countries,» said Dr Alexan Khalafyan, Professor in the Department of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence. — According to the WHO strategy, reducing the number of preterm births is a millennium priority. The combination of several factors considered in preterm birth prediction contributes to reducing preterm births and completing pregnancies. Prediction will improve the health of newborns and babies. Our system consists of three software products written in C-sharp that implement neural networks and a support vector method to solve the problem of predicting the possibility of preterm birth.
The silver medal was also awarded to the team of V.V. Dotsenko, V.K. Kindop, V.S. Muravyev, A.R. Chikava, A.A. Amirkhanyan, A.A. Russkikh, P.G. Dakhno for the development of «New S,N-containing heterocyclic compounds with potential analgesic and hepatoprotective action».
It should be noted that this year scientists of Kuban State University have won a total of 25 medals at international exhibitions, including 11 gold, 12 silver and 2 bronze.
