The history of the Institute of Geography, Geology, Tourism and Service dates back to 1920 when the University was founded. Until 1940, the Department of Geography was part of the Faculty of Natural History and Geography. In 1968 two departments were created: the Department of Physical Geography (Head — Associate Professor A. Kanonnikov) and the Department of Economic Geography (Head — Associate Professor A. Perfiliev). In 1970 Krasnodar State Pedagogical Institute was transformed into Kuban State University. At the same time the Faculty of Natural Sciences was divided into three independent faculties: Geography, Biology and Chemistry. From 1997 to 2017 the Dean of the Faculty of Geography was Prof. M. Belikov. New programmes were launched at the Faculty.
On 17 November 2017 the Faculty of Geography was transformed into the Institute of Geography, Geology, Tourism and Service by merging with the Department of Geology (the Department of Geology of Kuban State University was established in January 2004). Mikhail Belikov was appointed as the director of the institute.
