The Faculty of Philology at Kuban State University is proud of its century-old history. Kuban students have been taught philology by outstanding literary scholars and linguists, whose works are known in Russia and abroad: V. Mihelson, L. Stepanov, V. Popov, M. Savchenko, N. Glushkov, N. Samokhvalov, G. Nemets, A. Lykov, V. Kazmin. E. Zhirkova, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Honorary Educator of the Russian Federation, has been the head of the Faculty since 2016.
At present nearly 1000 students study at the Faculty of Philology, 62 teachers, including 15 doctors of sciences, professors, 36 candidates of sciences, associate professors teach there. The faculty implements a three-step system of education: bachelor’s, master’s and post-graduate studies.
Throughout its existence, the Faculty of Philology has trained more than 20,000 specialists. Most of them have dedicated themselves to teaching. Among them there are honoured teachers of the Russian Federation, winners of the competitions «The Best Teacher of Russia», «Teacher of the Year of Russia», «Spring of Teachers». Graduates of our faculty head the humanities departments of Kuban universities.
Many graduates have become famous writers in Russia and abroad: poet and translator Y. Kuznetsov; literary critic and critic Y. Seleznev, writer V. Likhonosov, poet V. Bakaldin. Many graduates of the faculty pursue careers in the mass media, while others have held high positions in government and administration, or used their knowledge in the religious sphere.
The consistently high level of competition for admission to the Faculty of Philology at Kuban State University is an undoubted indicator of the demand for basic humanities education, which provides for the intellectual, moral and spiritual development of the individual and society.

This is the only Master’s programme at Kuban State University devoted entirely to the study of fiction in its historical development, genre identity and pragmatic use.
The aim of the programme is to train a master’s student capable of extensive analytical work. All practical exercises are devoted to scientific reading, interpretation of literary texts and their interpretation in different traditions.
The main aim of the programme is to create a personality who has knowledge of the key themes of Russian and foreign literature, who is able to produce oral and written texts that are in demand in various professional fields.

The pedagogical aspect of the programme is closely linked to the managerial aspect: graduates become not only teachers, but also managers of educational structures.

The text is a key concept in this educational project and is explored in its various functional aspects: fiction and science, journalism and the Internet, the spoken and the written, the analysed and the constructed, the classical and the marginal.
This programme aims to master two key skills in the field of philology: students learn to understand any text and to produce a text according to certain genre rules.
Students will be able to interact freely with the various entities of textual reality, going beyond proofreading and editing to grasp the philosophy of the text.

Since the 1990s, the Department has been actively involved in cultural and educational projects within the framework of the partnership between Krasnodar and Karlsruhe. Contacts with the Krasnodar-Karlsruhe Friendship Society are actively developing. Since 2006, a two-year educational programme «European Business School» has been implemented in cooperation with the Walter Eucken Business School.
In 2013 the Department established the Regional German Education Centre RDAZ, a partner of the Goethe Institute in the field of international certification examinations and German language courses.

Science is an integral part of the work of the Department. Our teachers participate in international symposia of young scholars in Byzantine and Neo-Hellenistic studies, conferences of teachers of classical languages and translation theories and practices, seminars and round tables on teaching Greek as a foreign language. The Department organises international conferences on Hellenistic Studies and cooperates closely with leading Greek universities and educational centres (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greek Language Centre (Thessaloniki)), as well as with Moscow State University and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Thematically, the conference covers three main areas:
- Questions of cognitology, the verbalisation of cognitive models and their relation to the processes of cognition and discourse construction. This area analyses the nature of the cognitive-functional approach in linguistics, the role of the native speaker’s worldview in the search for equivalent translation solutions, the processes of metaphorisation in media discourse.
- Characteristics of the discursive space of modernity. This area is considered in terms of the diversity of discourse types. The focus is on the variety and diversity of discourse types, their genres and the specificity of the construction of speech acts.
- Possibilities of constructing new knowledge, e.g. when learning a foreign language, as well as methods of assessing the knowledge formed. The direction of the conference implies the consideration of different approaches that effectively influence the educational process.
